My deadline for finishing the 'alkeisoppikirja', or elementary textbook, is approaching. It's 31 tammikuuta, and now I'm halfway through. I'll start the new year with a translation of a short text from my book.

Helsingin keskusta - The center of Helsinki

Suomen pääkaupunki on Helsinki. Helsinki is the capital of Finland.
Helsingin vanhassa keskustassa on kaksi suurta toria, Kauppatori ja Senaatintori, jonka vanha nimi on Suurtori. In Helsinki's old center there are two big squares - Market square and Senate Square, whose old name is Big Square.
Senaatintorin ympärilla on monta kaunista, vanhaa rakennusta. Around Senate Square there are many beautiful old buildings.
Keskellä on Alexanteri II:n patsa. In the center is Alexander II's column.
Patsan takana on Tuomiokirkko eli Nikoilain kirkko. Behind the column is St Thomas Church or Nikolai's church.
Tuomiokirkon vasemmalla puolellla on yliopiston päärakennus ja yliopiston kirijasto. On the left side of St Thomas Church is the main building of the university and university library.
